The Place

Dalmatia region in Croatia is a dreamland for both climbers and sailors. Seventy-nine islands (and infinite number of islets) run parallel to the coast, among which Brač, Pag, and Hvar are the largest. It is a limestone lover’s paradise. There is everything from bouldering, short well-bolted sport routes, super long sport and traditional routes, to deep water soloing - almost every one of the 1000+ islands has vertical or overhanging cliffs on its south side! What better way to discover the area than sailing across all these islands?

The Mapo Tapo Climbing Sailing Journey

A certified mountain guide who is also a skipper and has been sailing these seas and climbed these cliffs for more than a decade, the beautiful sailing boat “Macrì”, hundreds of hidden spots for climbing and deep water solo and the crystal clear sea of Dalmatia. It is an expedition, not a 5* holiday: get ready to help out in the sailing manoeuvres and climb in really off-the-beaten-track crags!

  • 6 days of sailing around the 1000+ islands of Dalmatia, starting from Milna, in Brač island. In case of adverse weather conditions, you can rent a car with Icio to reach the crags.
  • Climbing with a certified UIAGM IFMGA mountain guide: not your average skipper! He can simply show you the best and secret crags, some of which he personally bolted, or if some of you need to refresh/learn some techniques or have the routes set-up and be belayed, he’s your guy!
  • Mapo Tapo supports the development of climbing in the area: we re-invest part of revenues to finance bolts and work with locals to boost sustainable tourism. There is so much potential in Dalmatia!
Icio did the first winter ascent to Cerro Torre in Patagonia (!!!), he was in the Italian National Launched Kilometer Team (personal speed of 230km / h), and he did extreme steep skiing in crazy couloirs
Well, a lot to talk about during the beautiful starry nights in Croatia! He is also an expert mountain guide: I am sure that even if you are an expert climber a trick or two may come handy!
The sailing boat is an an elegant 38' , well-equipped for offshore cruising (Wide walkways, sunbathing areas), but with elements that reveal its thoroughbred vocation.
With "Macrì", each of you is part of the crew: everyone participates in life aboard with the spirit of a base camp.
At your arrival in Milna, you will discuss an itinerary of the trip with Icio, considering weather conditions and the climbing level of the group.
Every day, you can decide to sleep at anchor or in port, and to eat on the boat or at the many cozy and authentic restaurants that are scattered in the small bays of Dalmatia.
In Dalmatia there are more than 70 existing crags and 3.000+ routes and plenty of rock left still to be developed.
The king here is limestone, ranging in style from overhanging tufas to fun slabs and grades from low 5th to 9a.
The real beauty of Dalmatia is that almost every island and islets can be climbed and, with the sailing boat, it become easily accessible!

Climbing Skills

The sailing and climbing expedition is conceived for climbers that want to explore and climb in pristine areas and leave the sailor life. Dalmatia area has crags for every level, from 5th to 9a. No minimum level is required, since Icio is a full certified mountain guide. What is needed is an adventurous attitude and thirst for exploration!

Liability

Mapo Tapo selects crags and local partners with the utmost care. We can for any inaccuracies, however, accept no liability. Rock climbing is a risk sport that takes place in nature. Ultimately, you are fully responsible for the choices you make. Mapo Tapo recommends that anyone who does not have sufficient knowledge not to go outdoor alone
