Named after the river which touches its western border, Jordan is a small country with a powerful historical heritage, and climbers know this well. Indeed, it was in this country of the Middle East that the first forms of climbing emerged, as nomadic Bedouins were scrambling sandstone peaks in search of animals to hunt. Today, alongside the then formed “Bedouin Roads”, Wadi Rum offers its sandstone rocks for both sport and trad climbing while maintaining its nomadic wilderness at core.
The country's powerful cultural and historical heritage is exemplified by one of the world's most famous archeological sites, the city of Petra. Half-built and half-carved into rock, the city was inhabited since prehistorical times and has been ever since a crossroads for many cultures: paying a visit to this world-known site is a must!
The remarkable historical heritage, a warm climate, off-the beaten tracks climbing routes, and extremely hospitable locals are just some of the many features that make Jordan a unique and authentic destination.
Climbers from all over the world dream about the sandstone peaks of the Wadi Rum area – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – but few of them have the occasion of transforming that dream into reality. The Mapo Tapo team is as ambitious as that!
Prepare to dive into the unknown for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the precious support and competence of the Bedouins of Wadi Rum – your guides of reference for the trip – who have decade-long history and expertise of climbing in the country.
Your basecamp for the trip will be the Bedouin outdoors Camp - a small family camp inside the Wadi Rum protected area, just 7km from the Wadi Rum village. The camp is eco-friendly: the water is brought directly from the Lawrence Spring and the food is cooked by the local Bedouins.
This is a climbing trip for autonomous climbers exclusively. We do not mind about your grade as much as your ability to be a fully independent climber. If you are unsure about your climbing level and you prefer to be guided or assisted in climbing, book onto one of our trips labelled 'Certified guide included' or contact us.
Mapo Tapo selects crags and local partners with the utmost care. For any inaccuracies, however, we can not accept any liability. Rock climbing is a risky sport that takes place in nature. Ultimately, you are fully responsible for the choices you make. Mapo Tapo recommends that anyone who does not have sufficient knowledge and skills not to go outdoor alone. Contact us to organize a trip with a certified mountain guide instead.
