Granada, Spain
Although better known for its historical cities and vibrant culture, Granada is the birthplace of Spanish sport climbing. In the mid 1970s some audacious local climbers started experimenting with free climbing in Los Caharros, and within a few years free climbing (and later sport climbing) was born in Spain. By the 80s and 90s Granada was home of some of the best climbers in the country who explored and developed most of the 3000+ routes in the region.
Despite this history, an in-depth guidebook to climbing in Granada has never been published in order to preserve the pristine environment and prevent overcrowding. You can, however, choose from over 20 different top class crags offering climbs for all levels, surrounded by dramatic scenery and the vibrant city rivalled by none.
