Overview

Bookings are now open for our ALPINISM and HIGH MOUNTAIN introductory level course. You’ll spend 3 days immersed in the beautiful setting of the Adamello Glacier learning the basics of mountaineering and glacier behaviour. The first two days of this course will focus on teaching you some of the technical and safety skills needed to safely ascend a peak: roping up on a glacier, abseiling, cartography, building anchors on snow, and recovery from a crevasse. On the third day, you will get to put these skills to the test, ascending one of the Adamello group's beautiful peaks.

Alessio is a mountain guide from Trentino, Italy, whose two great passions are rock and snow! He has traveled to guide and climb all over the world and loves to meet new people from all walks of life.

The Experience

3 days immersed in the beautiful Adamello Glacier environment learning the basics of Alpinism and mountaineering skills.

DAY 1

Introductory skills

Meet your guide and fellow travellers in Passo del Tonale, before heading to a nearby climbing wall to learn some basic alpinism skills. You’ll learn how to climb in boots, abseil, and how to tie some basic knots, as well as cartography skills including how to plan a route on a topographic map with a compass.

In the evening, we’ll head to Rifugio Mandrone where you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and good night’s sleep.

DAY 2

Glacier skills

After breakfast, we’ll head out for an educational day on the Mandrone glacier. You’ll learn how to rope up safely to cross a glacier, rescue someone from a crevasse and how to build an anchor on snow. Tonight we’ll be staying at the Rifugio Caduti dell’Adamello.

DAY 3

Mountain day!

It’s time to put your skills to the test! Today we’ll try for a nearby peak - depending on the conditions it could be the Giovanni Paolo II peak, Cresta Croce or Cannone Ippopotamo.

We’ll then return to Passo del Tonale, where you can say a final goodbye to your crew before heading home.

The program is very flexible to take into account weather conditions, climbing level, and endurance of the group

Adamello Glacier

A mountaineer's paradise, the Adamello group covers a vast territory of rich landscapes

The Adamello Glacier is located in the Adamello-Presanello mountain range of Northern Italy, which separates the provinces of Lombardy and Trentino. A mountaineer’s paradise, the group covers a vast territory of rich and varied landscapes, including 572 named mountains and over 42 square km of glaciers.

The Adamello Glacier, situated between 2,550 and 3,500m a.s.l. is the largest in the Italian Alps, and one of the largest in Europe. Once the pitching point of Italian soldiers in the First World War, today it attracts the attention of mountaineers and climatologists alike. The surrounding Adamello-Brenta Nature Park is a beautiful place to explore, boasting some incredible hiking, climbing, and wild landscapes with rare flora and fauna.

Basecamp

Rifugio Mandrone

For the full experience you’ll be staying in two different local mountain huts: Rifugio Mandrone (night 1) and Rifugio Caduti dell’Adamello (night 2), which are the perfect basecamps for the activities of the next day. Accommodation is in shared dorms, and breakfast and dinner included.

Climbing Skills

This course is designed for anyone who wants to discover and experience the magical world of glaciers. No prior winter mountaineering experience is needed, just a good level of fitness and some experience climbing, scrambling or summer mountaineering.

Liability

Mapo Tapo selects crags and local partners with the utmost care. For any inaccuracies, however, we can not accept any liability. Rock climbing is a risky sport that takes place in nature. Ultimately, you are fully responsible for the choices you make. Mapo Tapo recommends that anyone who does not have sufficient knowledge and skills not to go outdoor alone. Contact us to organize a trip with a certified mountain guide instead.
