Joan Olive

Joan Olive

Joan is a climbing guide and the manager of the hostel, and was part of the first group of climbers to have developed the region’s incredible potential in 1985. He even bolted and made the FA of the first 7b and 7c in Siurana, so is the perfect person to go to for advice on the crags, routes, and anything else.

Montsant Sur (La Morera de Montsant)

Montsant Sur (La Morera de Montsant)

Montsant Sur is the closest crag to the hostel, with certain sectors accessible by foot. On this 10km-long limestone cliff you’ll find approximately 500 sport routes up to 8c, and 150 mixed multi-pitch climbs. The climbing style is similar to nearby Margalef (minus any of the polish): pocket pulling on conglomerate rock, with mostly vertical to overhanging routes. There’s also a via ferrata for ‘rest’ days.
Siurana

Siurana

One of the most famous climbing areas in the world, Siurana, is located just 16km from the hostel! While this area has a reputation for hard, technical routes with a lot of crimps, there’s still plenty to try even if you are not climbing in the 7th, 8th or 9th grades. You’ll find over 2,000 sport routes from 3 to 9b+ on incredible quality limestone rock, navigating crimps, tufas and the occasional sloper, and offering incredible views from both belay and anchors. There’s even a small bouldering sector and a red sandstone sport climbing sector.
Margalef

Margalef

Every winter, the sleepy village of Margalef (located 41 km away from the hostel) comes alive with the hustle and bustle of climbers. Head to some of the harder sectors during this time and you’ll more likely than not spot a famous climber (or two) making the most of the over 2,000 routes of world-class sport climbing. Margalef is renowned for technical climbing on pockets, but you’ll find a surprising amount of variety, good range of grades, and incredible views from many of the crags.
Arbolí

Arbolí

Located just 22km from the Refugio, Arbolí boasts climbing of a practically identical style to Siurana (technical and crimpy sport routes) - but without any of the crowds. Here you can find 400 top-quality routes up to 8a+, beautiful scenery, and quiet crags (mostly without polish :) ) Bouldering fans: bring a crash pad, as the area is home to 100+ quality limestone boulders too.
La Mussara

La Mussara

La Mussara is the place to head if you’re looking for sport climbing with a view. The climbing sectors are located at the top of a steep hill overlooking the Mediterranean (about 30km from the Refugio), with approximately 550 sport routes and multi-pitches from 5 to 7c. Expect technical routes, around 25m long, on quality limestone.
Villanova de Prades

Villanova de Prades

Situated about 30km from the hostel, Villanova de Prades is well worth a visit for the quality of the climbing alone. You’ll find 400 technical routes up to 8b on conglomerate rock with a limestone layer. The climbing is mostly on crimps or pockets, with vertical to overhanging walls.
Plus more!!!

Plus more!!!

We’ve given you a taster of what the region has to offer, but there are many more crags with quality routes located at similar distances from the hostel (e.g. Els Cogullons, La iIba, Costellfollit (granite), El Penitent, Rojals, Cabaces, Montral…) You’ll also find various bouldering areas, with a total of over 2,000 problems - Joan is happy to advise you on how to make the most of your time.
