As a passionate Italian hiker with over 15 years of experience, I recently embarked on a hiking holiday around Lake Como, exploring its breathtaking trails and immersing myself in the region's awe-inspiring environment.
Surrounded by towering mountains, including the majestic Grigna, Resegone, and Legnone, Lake Como offers many outdoor opportunities for hikers of all levels. From leisurely lakeside strolls to challenging mountain ascents, the trails around Lake Como showcase the region's diverse landscapes, rich flora and fauna, and captivating vistas.

Lake Como is easily accessible from major cities in Italy and beyond. The most convenient option for exploring the region and accessing the hiking trails is renting a car. This provides the freedom to reach remote trailheads and navigate the winding roads that hug the lakeshore.
However, if you prefer to avoid driving, Lake Como is also well-connected by train and boat. The towns of Como, Bellagio, and Varenna can be easily reached by train from Milan, and from there, you can access some hiking trails on foot. Additionally, boats and ferries crisscross the lake, offering a scenic way to reach different trailheads and explore the towns that dot the lakeshore.

The Greenway del Lago di Como is a delightful trail that winds along the western shore of Lake Como, offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The section from Colonno to Lenno is particularly picturesque, passing through charming villages, lush gardens, and historic villas.
To reach the starting point in Colonno, you can take a boat or ferry from Como or any other town along the lake. Regular services connect the towns, allowing you to access the trailhead easily.
Carry water, sunscreen, and a hat, as some sections may be exposed to the sun. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Be aware of cyclists and other pedestrians along the trail.

The Greenway del Lago di Como can be enjoyed year-round, but the spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer can be crowded, especially in tourist hotspots, so consider visiting during weekdays or outside peak hours.

The Palmenwald - Cascata loop takes you on a scenic journey through lush forests, past cascading waterfalls and offers panoramic views of Lake Como. Starting from the charming town of Menaggio, this trail combines natural beauty with cultural exploration.
Menaggio can be reached by boat, ferry, or bus from other towns around the lake. If you're coming from Como, a ferry ride offers a leisurely and scenic approach to Menaggio.
Carry sufficient water, as some sections may not have water sources. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and use sunscreen. Be cautious of slippery rocks near the waterfall.
The best time to hike the Palmenwald - Cascata loop is during spring and autumn when temperatures are mild, and the foliage is vibrant. Summer can be hot, so it's advisable to start early in the day and bring plenty of water.

The Lungolago di Varenna - Baia di Varenna loop offers a delightful coastal walk, showcasing the beauty of Lake Como and the charming town of Varenna. This trail takes you along the lakeshore, passing through picturesque streets and reaching the tranquil Baia di Varenna.
Fiumelatte, where the trail starts, is easily accessible by train from Varenna-Esino station. From Varenna, you can walk or take a short train ride to Fiumelatte.
