Overview

Solana de Granada is a cozy hostel and climbers’ paradise located in the mountains north of the city of Granada. If you want to enjoy a friendly atmosphere and share a home with fellow climbers and travellers in a beautiful place – this is it! A charmingly refurbished traditional Andalucian house, Solana has a huge garden (with its very own climbing crag), and is located in a quiet mountain town with lots of nature and rock around. There’s plenty of climbing and bouldering within walking distance, and if you’re prepared to drive 10-60 minutes then thousands of routes of all grades and styles will be at your disposal... Granada city centre – one of the most beautiful in Europe – is just 40 minutes away by bus (or 30 minutes by car). There’s also the mountains super nearby, where you can participate in any sporty activity that takes your fancy, and the coast just 1 hour away :)

Local Hosts

Meet your hosts at Solana de Granada

Edu

Edu

Edu is a passionate climber who made his way from being a vet in Venezuela through Tenerife to Granada, where he had the idea to open a climbers hostel, because the area is just perfect for climbing, outdoor sports and holidays in general. He knows the crags of Granada (and Jaen) very well, so you can ask him for climbing advice and recommendations anytime. (photo © Jascha Polenz)

Miriam

Miriam

When Miri was formerly working in IT in Munich, Germany, she used to travel a lot for climbing and visited many places like Solana de Granada, before starting this climbing hostel project. Whatever you need during your stay, you can ask her and she will help you organize it.

Climbing Nearby

Cogollos

Cogollos

Cogollos is Solana de Granada's home base, with climbing sectors right inside and around the hostel! The crag boasts approximately 200 routes on world-class quality limestone, which tend to be long, overhanging and full of crimps and tufas. As many of the sectors are south-facing, it’s the perfect winter climbing spot. All walls are within 5 to 15 minutes walk from the hostel.
Alfacar

Alfacar

Alfacar – located on the corner of the Sierra de Alfaguara Natural Park – is one of the biggest climbing areas in Granada, boasting approximately 360 sport routes (and some awesome multi-pitches) scattered across 26 sectors. The climbing is incredibly diverse, with something for all grades, and some multi-pitch. The crag is a 10 minute drive or 1 hour walk from Solana, and offers awesome views over Granada.
Los Cahorros

Los Cahorros

One of the most scenic climbing spots in Spain, Los Cahorros is located in an amazing gorge full of rivers and waterfalls (making it a top hiking spot too). You'll find over 280 sport and multi-pitch routes, mostly from 4 to 8a+, which may feel a little sandbagged as this used to be a training crag for local alpinists looking to climb in Sierra Nevada. Los Cahorros is about a 40 minute drive from Solana.
Moclin

Moclin

Moclin is a pleasant crag located about a 35 minute drive from Solana, consisting of two main areas: a slabby sector and a sector with steep overhangs full of interesting holes. In total, you’ll find about 140 routes from 6a to 8b, and a fun via ferrata too. After climbing, you can visit to the beautiful village of Moclin for a cerveza and tapas.
Los Vados

Los Vados

Los Vados is a beautiful climbing area near the coast, about a 50 minute drive from Solana. Routes can be found on both sides of a huge limestone canyon, with walls up to 250m high. It’s a great area to go no matter the weather: in summer, the tall walls offer some shade, while in winter it stays mild on the rare bad-weather days. In addition to 280 sport routes, there are some incredible multi-pitch climbs and trad routes. After climbing, we recommend a visit at the beach (10 minutes away), to grab a beer in one of the Chiringuitos (beach bars) and enjoy the sunset...
Nivar

Nivar

Nivar is the neighbouring village to Cogollos, and home to a big limestone bouldering area which can be reached on foot (30-40min) or by car (5 mins) from Solana. The boulders start in the very easy grades, but since the area is still under development there’s lots to try and explore no matter how hard you climb.
El Patio

El Patio

Solana is probably the only climbing hostel with it's own crag right in the back yard! The ‘El Patio’ sector currently boasts around 20 single-pitch sport routes from 5+ to 7c, with lots of potential for new lines. There's often the opportunity to try new routes as they are bolted - and if you're lucky you may even make a first ascent.
Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada

The mountains of the Sierra Nevada range are a paradise for high alpine climbing. In summer, you can climb trad multi-pitches on the walls of Veleta, and in winter one of the many mixed alpine routes on Mulhacen, Veleta, Acazaba and more...
