What you'll do

Explore the wild beauty of Patagonia on an unforgettable hiking trip. Trek across the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, marveling at its towering ice walls and glacial waters. Discover El Chaltén, the “National Trekking Capital,” and hike the scenic trails of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. With expert guides and tailored itineraries, this Patagonia hiking tour ensures an incredible adventure in one of the world’s most stunning landscapes.

Itinerary

A transfer will pick you up at El Calafate airport, our first little city in Patagonia. We recommend arriving around 12-1 PM. Once we get to the hotel, we'll have our afternoon and evening to relax and sightsee the place. This bustling town set on the southern shores of Lago Argentina serves as the gateway point to Los Glaciares National Park and the incredible Perito Moreno Glacier. A very small village in years past, El Calafate has blossomed due to the heavy tourist interest in the area. Complete with many fine hotels and museums about the Patagonia region, the town serves as an excellent base camp for those exploring the iconic location.
We'll start early for one of the most breaktaking experience of the trip: "Sailing and visiting the famous walkways of Perito Moreno Glacier". Los Glaciares National Park is located in the area known as the Austral Andes in Argentina, in the southwest of Santa Cruz on the border with Chile. Due to its magnificent natural beauty, it constitutes being a wonder of the world, and was declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1981. The duration of this tour is about 8 hours, including the transfer, a one-hour sailing and visit to the walkways of Glaciar Perito Moreno, 7 km from the port.
After breakfast, a scenic transfer takes us to El Chaltén, Argentina’s hiking capital and the youngest town in the country. This mountain village is located on the riverside of Rio de las Vueltas, within the Los Glaciares National Park at the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy mountains, both popular for climbing, the two highest peaks in the region. We prepare our Patagonia hiking gear and explore the town before our upcoming treks. Distance: 220 km (136.7 mi) (driving)
After breakfast, we'll take a 1 hour transfer to the river "Eléctrico". Once arrived, we start to walk on the trail to Poincenot camp through a forest of “Lengas”, typical Patagonic tree, having the Blanco River on our right. During our way we do different stops to learn about the typical fauna and flora of our National Park. After an hour, we’ll stop at Piedras Blancas glacier viewpoint where we’ll have the opportunity to take pictures and notice the trace left by this glacier during its setback along the last years. Following our way to Poincenot camp we’ll have an excellent view of Fitz Roy’s massif to get even closer after we cross the Blanco river’s bridge heading the last part of this trail all the way up to Laguna De los Tres. This part is the most demanding one due its elevation gain. You can stay at Poincenot Camp, waiting for the group. But the best is yet to come! Once we arrive to the "laguna", we’ll take some time to have our lunch, take pictures and have some rest at the lake shore. After we recover from this last effort, we’ll begin our way down to Poincenot camp and then finally to El Chaltén town. Distance: 22 Km.. Distance: 22 km (13.6 mi) | Elevation Gain: +800 m (+2,625 ft) -800 m (-2,625 ft) | Time: 8-9 hours
After breakfast, we got onto the trail to our final destination the valley of Cerro Torre. During the trail, we'll enjoy the emblematic Patagonian forest of Lengas and Ñires till the final part of our trek crossing an old moraine to face Lake Torre and Grande glacier. Once we completed this traverse, we’ll return to town through Cerro Torre valley along the Fitz Roy river till the classic viewpoint and then reaching a beautiful waterfall called Margarita closing our itinerary returning to El Chalten. Distance: 20 km (12.4) | Elevation Gain: +800 m (+2,625 ft) -800 m (-2,625 ft) | Time: 6 hours
This day we say goodbye. You'll take the regular van to Calafate, which departs at 10am o’clock, arriving in at the airport at about 1.30pm. From here, you can catch your flight home (any flight 3pm onwards works), marking the end of an unforgettable Patagonia hiking trip.

I learned about Mapo Tapo from a friend back home in the US and was a bit hesitant because I never booked a hiking tour group before. Mapo tapo takes care of everything behind the scenes so you can just show up, settle in to the hotels, and start exploring the towns on arrival. They connect you with local guides who are friendly, knowledgeable about local nature and wildlife, and fun to talk to during the whole trip. When we met the guide at El Chaltén, we were also able to change our day 5 hike as a group, so the whole trip felt really flexible and accommodating. We had plenty of time after the hikes each day to explore on our own as well. I would be more than happy to book my next hiking trip with mapo tapo next year!
