What you'll do

A journey designed for travelers who are passionate about the mountains and true lovers of adventure, seeking an experience that goes far beyond traditional trekking. This expedition combines the spectacular Huayhuash Circuit with the ascents of Mount León Dormido and Mount Pumarinri, creating the perfect blend of trekking and mountaineering. Along the route, travelers will explore remote valleys, striking turquoise glacial lakes, high mountain passes above 5,000 meters, and campsites surrounded by some of the most iconic peaks of the Peruvian Andes. Accompanied by certified mountain guides, supported by carefully planned logistics, and operating under strict safety standards, this expedition offers an unforgettable challenge for those eager to push their limits and discover the true essence of the mountains.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Welcome, Gear Up, Feast

Touch down in Huaraz, the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca. Your journey begins with a smooth transfer to the hotel, where comfortable rooms and private amenities await to ensure a restful start. At 5 PM, the guide will conduct a thorough gear check to ensure you're fully prepared for the peaks. Then, at 6.30 PM, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner to share the excitement of the days ahead.

Day 2 – Carhuacocha Lake Andean Majesty

We depart from Huaraz very early in the morning and drive through the beautiful Andean highlands. We stop in the town of La Unión for breakfast before continuing our journey to Queropalca. Upon arrival, we meet our muleteers and begin our trek to Carhuacocha Lake. The hike takes us through scenic valleys, pastures, and traditional farmlands, with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks of the Huayhuash Range. After approximately 4 hours of trekking, we reach our campsite at Carhuacocha Lake. In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes. Overnight at the campsite. Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +307 m (1007 ft), Elevation loss: -0 m (0 ft) | Time: 4 hrs

Day 3 – Sunrise Lakes and Snowy Peaks

If you are a photographer, we advised you to wake up before dawn this morning to watch the sunrise over the Lake and Peaks from our campsite. Today, we will leave Carhuacocha towards the Huayhuash camp, located at an altitude of (4,350 m / 14,271 ft ). We will arrive at the Huayhuash camp in approximately 7 hours; crossing 7 beautiful snowy peaks and the beautiful Siula, Cangrajanca, and Quesillo Cocha lakes. We will ascend to the Siula Pass (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), where we will be able to admire the beauty of the Yerupajá, Siula Grande, and Trapecio (5,644 m / 18,517 ft) snow-capped mountains. Then, we will descend to our camp at Huayhuash. In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes. Overnight at the campsite. Distance: 17 km (10.6 mi) | Elevation gain: +662 m (2172 ft) | Elevation loss: -450 m (1476 ft) | Time: 7 hrs

Day 4 – Portachuelo Pass to Viconga Lake's lion

After breakfast, we will continue our trek and ascend towards the Portachuelo Pass (4650 m / 15255 ft), where we will see the snow-capped peaks of Trapecio, Puscanturpa (5430 m / 17814 ft), as well as the snow-capped peaks of León Huacanan (5427 m / 17805 ft) and Quesillo Janca (5357 m / 17575 ft) in the Raura mountain range. We will continue our trek and descend near Lake Viconga to set up camp and prepare all the climbing equipment so that the following day we can ascend the snow-capped peak of León Dormido (Sleeping Lion).In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes.Overnight at the campsite. Day 5 – Nevado León Dormido Summit and Hot Springs

Today we will attempt the ascent of the impressive Nevado León Dormido (5,421 m / 17,785 ft), one of the most scenic glaciated peaks of the Raura Mountain Range. We will start very early in the morning, following a route across moraines and glacier terrain while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and remote Andean landscapes. After reaching the summit and taking time to enjoy the breathtaking panoramas of the Raura Mountain Range, we will begin our descent. In the afternoon, we will continue descending to Gunoc Camp, where we can relax and recover after a rewarding day in the mountains. There, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy the natural hot springs, a perfect way to soothe our muscles and take in the peaceful surroundings.In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes.Overnight at the campsite. Distance: 6 km (3.7 mi) | Elevation gain: +970 m (3182 ft) | Elevation loss: -107 m (351 ft) | Time: 7 hrs

Day 6 – Recovery and the Raura Range

Following our successful ascent of Nevado León Dormido, today will be dedicated to rest, recovery, and preparation for the next objective of the expedition: Nevado Pumarinri. We will enjoy a relaxed day at Gunoc Camp, allowing our bodies to recover from the previous climb while taking in the spectacular scenery of the Raura Mountain Range. Throughout the day, our guides will review equipment, route conditions, and safety procedures for the upcoming ascent. There will also be time to organize personal gear, enjoy the nearby hot springs, and recharge energy for the challenge ahead.This important recovery day will help ensure we are well-rested and fully prepared for our attempt on Nevado Pumarinri next day.In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes.Overnight at the campsite.

Day 7 – Summiting Nevado Pumarinri

Today we will attempt the ascent of Nevado Pumarinri (5,450 m / 17,881 ft), one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciated peaks in the region. We will start before dawn, making our way through moraine terrain and onto the glacier as the first light illuminates the surrounding mountains. As we gain altitude, spectacular views of both the Huayhuash and Raura mountain ranges will unfold around us, offering a unique perspective of Peru’s high Andes. The climb is a rewarding combination of glacier travel and high-altitude mountaineering, leading us to a stunning summit with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and turquoise lakes.After enjoying time at the summit for photographs and rest, we will carefully descend back to camp, where we can relax and celebrate another successful day in the mountains.In the later afternoon, we will enjoy a hot coffee or coca tea while observing the landscapes.Overnight at the campsite. Distance: 16 km (9.9 mi) | Elevation gain: +1100 m (3609 ft) | Elevation loss: -1100 m (3609 ft) | Time: 10 hrs

Day 8 – Farewell Andes return to Huaraz

After our final night in the Raura Mountain Range, we will enjoy breakfast at Gunoc Camp before beginning our journey back. A vehicle will pick us up directly at Gunoc Camp, and we will descend by road toward the town of Cajatambo. From Cajatambo, we will continue our drive back to Huaraz, crossing high Andean landscapes, remote valleys, and traditional villages along the route. This journey offers one last chance to appreciate the beauty of the central Andes after our successful expedition. Upon arrival in Huaraz, we will transfer to the hotel, marking the end of the adventure
