What you'll do

The Alta Via 1 is a legendary 120 km trek winding through the heart of Italy's Dolomites. Beginning at Lago di Braies and ending in Belluno, it takes hikers across dramatic limestone peaks, lush valleys, and charming mountain huts. The well-marked trail features iconic spots like the towering Tofane and the Civetta massif. With manageable daily distances, it suits adventurers of all levels. Whether it's sunrise over rugged cliffs or starlit nights in cozy lodges, this trek delivers breathtaking scenery and a true taste of alpine magic. Our itinerary covers the 89.6 km version of the route, concluding at Passo Duran. The final stretch to Belluno includes a demanding via ferrata section that would significantly raise the technical level of the experience, so we've chosen this endpoint to keep the adventure consistent and accessible throughout.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Mestre

Arrive at Venice Marco Polo Airport and transfer to our hostel in the city of Mestre. The meeting point is at the hostel at 4PM. There, we hold a briefing session to check equipment and go over the details of the trekking route.

Day 2 - Lake Braies –> Hike to Rifugio Biella (2,327 m)

At 8:00 AM, we travel to the starting point of our trek by private taxi (approximately 3 hours). We begin our journey at Lago di Braies, the most iconic lake in the Dolomites, renowned for its turquoise waters and the striking white cliffs that surround it. We follow a trail that winds through a pine forest and rocky terrain beneath the majestic Croda del Becco (2,810 m / 9,219 ft). The path ascends through a narrow mountain pass with a few easy, equipped sections until we reach the alpine meadows. Finally, we have the opportunity to summit Croda del Becco, where we’ll enjoy panoramic views of the lake. The day ends at a mountain hut, where we have dinner and spend the night, surrounded by the peaks (optional ascent with 3km and 440m+/-).

Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) | Elevation gain: +900 m (+2,953 ft) -107 m (-351 ft) | Time: 5/6 hours

Day 3 - Hike to Rifugio Lavarella (2,060 m) or Rifugio Fanes in 2027

We continue our trek across a beautiful high plateau with breathtaking views of Croda Rossa and Monte Cristallo. The classic alpine landscape of the region surrounds us with fir trees, meadows, wooden huts, streams, and crystal-clear lakes. We cross wide pastures and descend along a gentle trail into the valley, entering South Tyrol. There, we take a break at the welcoming Pederù mountain hut before ascending the next valley, surrounded by towering peaks. Our next hut is located in a wide alpine meadow at 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) above sea level.

Distance: 14km (8.7 mi) | Elevation Gain: +770 m (+2,526 ft) -1050 m (-3,444 ft) | Time: 6/7 hours

For the 2027 departure, the group will be accommodated at Rifugio Fanes, near Rifugio Lavarella. The distances are the same.

Day 4 - Hike to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2,752 m)

We follow the Alta Via 1, passing Lago di Limo (2,157 m / 7,076 ft) and enjoying stunning views of the Fanes group, southern mountain ranges, and Marmolada. After crossing Passo Tagéda, we take a broad trail along Forcella del Lago (2,486 m / 8,156 ft) and descend to Lago Lagazuoi (2,182 m / 7,158 ft). In the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Natural Park, we explore WWI front-line remnants and visit the Great War open-air museum before ascending switchbacks to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2,752 m / 9,028 ft), offering breathtaking alpine panoramas.

Distance: 12.6 km (7.8 mi) | Elevation Gain: +1,100 m (+3,609 ft) -500 m (-1,640 ft) | Duration: 6/7 hours

Day 5 - Hike to Rifugio 5 Torri (2,137 m)

Today we undertake a spectacular ascent to the summit that dominates the massif, reaching an altitude of 3,200 meters (10,499 feet). A steep and rocky trail leads us to the top, where we are rewarded with breathtaking 360° panoramic views—stretching from Marmolada to Piz Boé, Pelmo, and Cristallo. After the climb, we descend along a more comfortable path to the valley floor, then begin the ascent toward the 5 Torri. Here, we explore one of the most iconic sites in the Ampezzo Dolomites: the largest open-air museum of the Great War. The 5 Torri are renowned for their unique rock formations and legendary climbing routes. Our mountain hut is located right next to this remarkable geological landmark.

Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +670 m (+2,198 ft) -900 m (-2,953 ft) | Time: 6 hours

The accommodation can change based on availability and period. For these two dates in 2027 (24-31 July and 7-14 August) you will stay at Rifugio Averau.

Day 6 - Hike to Rifugio Staulanza (2,450 m)

From the hut, we follow a forest trail beneath the towering cliffs of Croda del Lago, heading toward Monte Pelmo (3,172 m / 10,407 ft). We reach the stunning Lago Federa and cross the Mondeval plateau along an easy path. This area is famous for the discovery of the “Mondeval Man,” the skeleton of a Mesolithic hunter. Less traveled by hikers, this region offers sweeping, majestic views that open up toward the meadows in the valley below. Let me know if you'd like to add distance, elevation, or estimated hiking time for this section too.

Distance: 18 km (11.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +750 m (+2,461 ft) -1,400 m (-4,593 ft) | Time: 7 hours

Day 7 - Hike to Rifugio Vazzoler (2,200 m)

We follow the classic route of the Alta Via 1, starting from Passo Staulanza and heading toward the imposing Civetta massif, whose 3,220-meter (10,564-foot) summit draws the boldest mountaineers in search of great ascents. We hike across alpine meadows and along a breathtaking balcony trail beneath the majestic cliffs of Civetta, surrounded by stunning high-mountain scenery. We take a break at the welcoming Rifugio Tissi to rest and recharge before continuing along a picturesque path through lush forests and gentle pastures. At last, we reach our mountain hut, nestled in a unique setting beneath the dramatic Torre Venezia, where a peaceful night in the heart of the mountains awaits us.

Distance: 15.5 km (9.6 mi) | Elevation gain: +800 m (+2,625 ft) -900 m (-2,953 ft) | Time: 7/8 hours

Day 8 - Rifugio Vazzoler --> Passo Duran --> Mestre (2,100 m)

The final stage of the Alta Via 1 takes us to Passo Duran, a remote and picturesque mountain pass connecting the Zoldo Valley with Agordino. We skirt around the Civetta massif along a wilder, more authentic trail, crossing rugged glacial cirques and narrow panoramic passes. This is undoubtedly the least traveled section of the route, where nature retains all its purity and splendor. The terrain on this final stage is noticeably more rugged than on previous days. The trail becomes rockier, with a few short exposed sections, steeper slopes, and occasional narrow paths. Good footing and confidence hiking on uneven mountain terrain are essential, making this a rewarding and adventurous finish to the trek. We conclude our Dolomites adventure at Passo Duran before transferring by private taxi to Mestre (Venice), bringing an unforgettable week in the mountains to a perfect close (arrival around 4:00 PM).

Distance: 11.5 km (7.1 mi) | Elevation gain: +730 m (+2,395 ft) | Elevation loss: -850 m (-2,789 ft) | Time: 5–6 hours
