What you'll do

Embark on the Machame Route, famously known as the Whiskey Route. The 7-day trek version is one of the most popular routes. Praised for its challenging yet rewarding path, it boasts a high summit success rate due to its "trek high, sleeps low" acclimatization advantage. With steeper trails than the Marangu Route, it offers unparalleled scenic beauty, starting from the southwest and crossing the Shira Plateau. Perfect for those seeking a memorable Kilimanjaro adventure.

Itinerary

We gather at Kilimanjaro International Airport, then head to Moshi to prepare. Our pre-trek briefing tonight ensures we're all set for the ascent, offering a chance to bond with our fellow adventurers. We set two pick-up times: 10 AM or 3 PM. So we recommend arriving at one of these two times.
Our ascent begins at the Machame Gate (1,817 m / 5,961 ft), entering the lush rainforest that blankets Kilimanjaro's base. The journey to Machame Camp (3,021 m / 9,911 ft) is the first step of our collective adventure. Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation Gain: +1,204 m (+3,950 ft) | Time: 6-7 hours
We ascend to the Shira Plateau (3,830 m / 12,566 ft), leaving the dense forest for expansive views of the mountain's vastness. Kilimanjaro's summit in the distance beckons us forward. Distance: 4.8 km (3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +809 m (+2,655 ft) | Time: 5-6 hours
Crossing the moorland to Barranco Camp (3,972 m / 13,031 ft), the terrain shifts, presenting new challenges and landscapes. Our path under the Lava Tower showcases the diverse environments of Kilimanjaro. Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation Gain: +800 m (+2,624 ft) -658 m (-2,159 ft) | Time: 7-8 hours
We begin at Barranco Camp, descending into the Great Barranco and then tackling the steep Barranco Wall, which divides us from Kibo's southeastern slopes. Our path, adorned by the Heim and Kersten glaciers, leads us to Karanga Valley and Karanga Camp. An afternoon hike to 4,200m is on offer for those up for it, aiding acclimatization before we settle back at camp. Distance: 8.5 km (5.3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +740 m (+2,428 ft) -72 m (-236 ft) | Time: 7-8 hours
Post-breakfast at Karanga Camp (3,963 m / 13,002 ft), our trek to Barafu Camp (4,640 m / 15,223 ft) crosses the moon-like scree slopes, a visual testament to the altitude's effect. The day's effort culminates at Barafu Camp, where rest and early dinner prime us for the summit push at midnight. Distance: 3 km (1.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +677 m (+2,221 ft) | Time: 3-4 hours
Our summit bid begins in the dark, aiming for Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,340 ft). This challenging climb rewards us with the achievement of reaching the highest point in Africa. We descend to Millennium Camp (3,790 m / 12,434 ft) for a well-earned rest. Distance: 13.4 km (8.3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +1,255 m (+4,117 ft) -2,105 m (-6,906 ft) | Time: 12-15 hours
Our journey back to civilization takes us through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,630 m / 5,348 ft), where we conclude our trek and celebrate the completion of our Kilimanjaro journey. Distance: 12.1 km (7.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: -2,160 m (-7,087 ft) | Time: 6-7 hours
As our Kilimanjaro adventure ends, we part ways, enriched by the experiences shared and the memories made on the slopes of Africa's tallest peak.We recommend leaving after lunch and having the last celebration together with the guide.
