What you'll do

There are lands where nature is not merely a backdrop, but the absolute protagonist and a primordial force. This journey into the heart of the Canadian Rockies is a tribute to the most authentic wilderness, a total immersion among millenary glaciers, lakes of an unreal turquoise, and forests that seem to have no boundaries. An itinerary designed for those seeking the wild pulse of North America, far from the paths of mass tourism. Our journey begins in Kananaskis Country, the secret land of Canadians. Here, amidst the silvery reflections of the Sheep Lakes, we will reconnect with the ancestral elements, sleeping in the silence of the woods in authentic Teepee tents—symbols of the Plains Cree culture. This is only the beginning of an ascent that will lead us across the legendary passes of Banff: from the panoramic Sentinel Pass, with its 360-degree view of the "Ten Peaks," to the mystical solitude of Egypt Lake, a turquoise gem reachable only after a long and rewarding trek. The soul of this trip lies in its contrasts. We will move from the convivial warmth of a historic pub in Field, the tiny railway village of Yoho National Park, to relaxing in resin-scented wooden chalets, before facing the ultimate challenge in Jasper: the Skyline Trail. We will hike for miles above the treeline, where the sky seems to touch the peaks, experiencing the thrill of surveying the entire arc of the Rockies from above. From the mythical Icefields Parkway, one of the most spectacular roads on the planet, to the untamed heights where the Grizzly bear and the Golden eagle reign supreme, this journey is an invitation to rediscover the luxury of silence and the wonder of exploration. It is not just a trek; it is the call of the wild becoming reality.

Itinerary

Touchdown in Calgary by 5 PM, the gateway to the vast Canadian wilderness. You'll meet your guide and fellow adventurers at the airport, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Rockies. Settle into the rhythmic pace of the mountains over a welcome dinner, resting up before we trade the city lights for the legendary skylines and deep silence of the backcountry tomorrow.
Fueled by a hearty breakfast, we set off (1 hour transfer) along the legendary Trans-Canada Highway toward the rugged heart of Kananaskis. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbors, this wild sanctuary—the cinematic backdrop for Brokeback Mountain—is a local secret cherished for its deep forests and glass-like lakes. It is the perfect introduction to the Canadian Rockies, offering a sense of solitude that is hard to find elsewhere. Today is about finding your rhythm. We’ll enjoy two gentle warm-up hikes to soak in the crisp mountain air, stopping for a lakeside picnic lunch. Afterward, we’ll navigate a scenic gravel backroad where you’ll keep eyes peeled for a first glimpse of a black bear. We end the day in the vibrant town of Canmore, toasting our journey with a local craft beer and a classic Canadian dinner. Distance: 8 km (5.0 mi) | Elevation gain: +310 m (1017 ft), Elevation loss: -310 m (1017 ft) | Time: 2.5 hrs
The day begins with the slow, rhythmic rituals of camp life: breakfast prepared in the heart of the wilderness as dawn light filters through towering firs. Today, we venture into Kananaskis Country, a vast and proudly wild region where time stands still, and nature remains unchallenged. Our journey leads us deep into the majestic solitude of the Rockies. Leaving the world behind, we follow a trail through the resinous scent of the boreal forest, gradually revealing spectacular vistas of glacier-carved valleys. We’ll reach the Sheep Lakes—hidden alpine gems far from the tourist crowds—before arriving at the highlight of the trek: Rae Lake. Tucked into a glacial cirque beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Rae, this is where the "Canadian immensity" becomes tangible. Keep your eyes peeled for golden eagles circling above or moose grazing by the shore. After 18km of total immersion, we return to the mountain town of Canmore for a dinner celebrating local flavors. The night offers a truly ancestral experience: sleeping in iconic Tepee tents. Redesigned to offer the comfort of a real bed while maintaining a deep connection to the earth, falling asleep to the sounds of the Canadian night is the perfect way to honor the spirit of the mountains. Distance: 18 km (11.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +500 m (1640 ft), Elevation loss: -500 m (-1640 ft) | Time: 6 hrs
Leave focus on the horizon as we journey into Banff National Park, the historic crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies. After a scenic 1-hour drive, we’ll arrive at the charming mountain village of Banff, where the morning is yours to soak in the alpine atmosphere and wander through timber-framed streets. Enjoy a slow afternoon browsing local shops and gathering supplies, breathing in the crisp mountain air before we head north. Tonight, the true wilderness calls as we pitch our tents under the vast, starlit skies of Jasper, ready for the adventures that lie ahead.
Awaken your senses at Moraine Lake, a turquoise jewel cradled by the jagged Ten Peaks. Guided by the crisp mountain air, you’ll ascend through ancient larch forests to reach the legendary Sentinel Pass. From this high-altitude vantage point, the sheer scale of the Rockies unfolds in a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of rock and ice. After descending, the adventure continues along the scenic Bow Valley Parkway. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready; this is prime territory for spotting grizzly bears, elk, and wolves in their untamed habitat. Distance: 18 km (11.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +800 m (2625 ft), Elevation loss: -900 m (-2953 ft) | Time: 6 hrs
Leave the beaten path behind as we venture deep into the untamed heart of the Rockies. Today’s journey takes us toward Egypt Lake, a turquoise jewel hidden among towering peaks and accessible only to those traveling on foot. Starting near Sunshine Village, we wind through dense evergreen forests before emerging into the vibrant alpine meadows of Healy Pass. If timed right, you’ll witness one of Canada’s most iconic wildflower displays, a kaleidoscope of color stretching toward the horizon. From the pass, enjoy 360-degree views of the distant Mount Assiniboine massif before descending into the glacial basin. We’ll set up camp by the lakeshore to spend a night under a brilliant canopy of stars, embracing the profound silence and raw beauty of the Canadian backcountry. Distance: 14 km (8.7 mi) | Elevation gain: +900 m (2953 ft), Elevation loss: -375 m (-1230 ft) | Time: 6 hrs
Waking up to the profound silence of the mountains, we start the day with a warm breakfast in the heart of the wilderness. Our morning is spent exploring the hidden gems of this natural amphitheater: the hauntingly beautiful Scarab and Mummy Lakes. Tucked away on a higher plateau, these deep blue waters sit beneath towering vertical walls, offering a scene of pure, untouched serenity. As we begin our journey back, we ascend once more toward Healy Pass for a final, sweeping view of the permanent glaciers lining the horizon. A gentle descent through the valley leads us back to our van for the drive to Banff. The evening is yours to unwind—whether that’s a celebratory dinner in town or a restorative soak in the Upper Hot Springs, it is the perfect way to toast to our immersion in the Canadian wild before we head toward the legendary Icefields Parkway. Distance: 13 km (8.1 mi) | Elevation gain: +600 m (1969 ft), Elevation loss: -900 m (-2953 ft) | Time: 6 hrs
After the intensity of the high peaks, today is about breathing in the quiet magic of the Canadian Rockies, and we'll travel by land (approximately a 1.5-hour drive). We leave Banff behind for Yoho National Park, a place where the wilderness feels even more profound and untouched. Our first stop is Emerald Lake, a glacial jewel where the water’s color defies description. Here, you can enjoy a gentle stroll along the lakeshore path or simply soak in the views from the historic lodge's wooden docks. We then witness the raw power of nature at the Natural Bridge, where the Kicking Horse River has carved a spectacular passage through ancient rock. The afternoon leads us to Field, a charming mountain hamlet frozen in time. With its colorful houses and quiet streets, it’s the perfect place to slow down before we gather at the local pub. Sharing a craft beer and hearty meal alongside local climbers, you’ll experience the authentic "mountain soul" of Canada. We end the day at our cozy forest chalet, tucked away in the woods for a night of pure alpine serenity.
Wake up in the heart of the wilderness for a day dedicated to the giants of Yoho National Park. We begin at the thunderous Takakkaw Falls, where the roar of one of Canada’s highest waterfalls sets the pace for our adventure. From here, we’ll ascend the legendary Iceline Trail, widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking paths in the Rockies. As you hike along this celestial balcony, you’ll be treated to front-row views of the massive Wapta Glacier and the mist rising from the valley floor. On our descent, we stop to witness the raw power of the Kicking Horse River at Natural Bridge, a limestone masterpiece carved by centuries of rushing water. We’ll conclude our journey back at the chalet, sharing stories over a traditional Canadian barbecue under the vast, starlit Yoho sky. Distance: 15 km (9.3 mi) | Elevation gain: +500 m (1640 ft), Elevation loss: -600 m (-1969 ft) | Time: 6 hrs
Buckle up for a journey (3-hour drive) along the Icefields Parkway, a stretch of pavement consistently ranked among the world’s most beautiful drives. Connecting Banff and Jasper, these 232 kilometers are a symphony of wild scenery where black bears often forage for berries right by the roadside. We’ll stand in awe of the sheer power of Athabasca Falls and gaze up at the 3,491-meter peak of Mount Athabasca, stretching our legs with a hike to Wilcox Pass for a legendary view of the glaciers. The day’s masterpiece is Peyto Lake, a glacier-fed wonder famous for its unreal emerald hue and unique star shape. Nestled at 1,880 meters, it truly feels like a gemstone guarded by the surrounding peaks. As we pull into Jasper National Park, we’ll cap off this sensational road trip with a wander through the deep limestone walls of Maligne Canyon, feeling the true spirit of the Canadian wilderness.
After breakfast, we leave our lodge for a short drive into the heart of Jasper National Park. After leaving the vehicle, we load the gear needed for the next two nights into our backpacks and set off along the Fryatt Valley Trail. This trek is one of the most spectacular and lesser-known hiking experiences in Jasper National Park. It is an 'out and back' route of approximately 40 kilometers that passes through dense forests to a breathtaking glacial amphitheater with towering waterfalls and lakes. The first 12 km of the hike toward the Lower Fryatt campground wind along an old fire road through the woods. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of the Athabasca River valley. Past the Fryatt campground, the trail climbs gradually through the forest for another 6 km before reaching a U-shaped glacial valley where Brussels Campground, our site for the first night, is located. We set up camp and cook together in perfect 'backcountry' style. Overnight at the camp. Distance: 18 km (11.2 mi) | Elevation gain: +600 m (1969 ft), Elevation loss: -0 m (0 ft) | Time: 7 hrs
After a pleasant wake-up call in the heart of nature and a regenerating breakfast, we break camp and organize our backpacks. Today will be the day of the famous Headwall, a spectacular section leading to the Sydney Vallance Hut and the wonderful lakes of the upper valley. We rejoin the trail from the Brussel Campground, which continues on a gentle slope for about 3.5 kilometers, after which the path climbs abruptly with an 800-meter elevation gain. Once over the notorious Headwall, the view opens up onto the hanging valley, and in a few minutes, we reach the Sydney Vallance Hut, a red mountain hut nestled between glaciers and alpine lakes. We will stop here for a lunch break, fully enjoying the beauty of a spectacular landscape that is unique in the world. After this very pleasant, regenerating break, we return to the main trail, tackling the Headwall again—this time on the descent—which will lead first back to the Brussel Campground and then, continuing down the valley, to the Lower Fryatt Campground where we will set up camp for the night. We pitch the tents and cook dinner all together. Overnight at the camp. Distance: 15 km (9.3 mi) | Elevation gain: +400 m (1312 ft), Elevation loss: -800 m (-2625 ft) | Time: 7 hrs
After breakfast, we break camp and return along the same path to our vehicle before departing for Maligne Lake. From here, we will take a short walk through the woods to the secluded Moose Lake, where, if we are lucky, we may encounter another iconic Canadian animal: the moose. Around lunchtime, we will resume our journey south towards Calgary. Distance: 12 km (7.5 mi) | Elevation gain: 0m (0ft) Elevation loss: -800 m (-2625 ft) | Time: 2 hrs
As our journey through the rugged heart of the Rockies comes to a close, we enjoy one last breakfast surrounded by the echoes of the wild. From the jagged peaks to the ancient glaciers, the spirit of the mountains travels home with us. We’ll transfer to Calgary International Airport by 11 AM, bidding farewell to the Great North as we board our flights, carrying the vastness of the Canadian wilderness in our hearts.
